HOUSING THE URBAN POOR - A NEW GUIDE FOR ASIAN CITIES Rapid urbanization is taking place across Asia, with more and more people in need of housing. Over 500 million people live in slums and squatter settlements in the Asia-Pacific region. At the same time, the pressure of rapid urbanization and economic growth has resulted in growing numbers of evictions of poor urban households from their neighborhoods. In most cases, they are relocated to peripheral areas far from centers of employment and economic opportunities.
