However, UN-HABITAT’s State of the World’s Cities Report 2006/7 has broken new ground by showing that the urban poor suffer from an urban penalty: Slum dwellers in developing countries are as badly off if not worse off than their rural relatives.

The misconception that the general economic system in the urban area is basically born in the national economic parameters.Statistics which overlooks the real daily expenditure of each urban dweller and only uses average of few individuals. A lot of factors play a role in such statistics such as the availability of the person ,the varied expense per day, and disparities in the distribution of resources.For example much of the resources needed in the areas with people in need are concentrated on areas where it is less needed and that brings the issue of access to them.Moreover many of the personalities responsible for such roles concentrate much on political matters and other issues so that the cry of the slum dweller in the same city is often overlooked. Roads leading to the slums,settlements are dilapidated, sanitary and water supply arein limited supply and securiy is far from better,worse.Living condition in urban areas is expensive and is made worse with the high rate of unemployment or lack of proper education due to lack of finance, so that opting to live in the slums is inevitable.Consequently, there is overcrowding in these areas and heightened crimes becomes an alternative unfortunately.

Indeed, the urban population enjoy a demanding life, a day-to-day higher expenditure with less income. They do not produce, and the majority depend on informal small scale business. There is too much vulnerability, unployment, insecurity and misbehavior.

True, slum dwellers in developing nations are worse off than their rural relatives because all their income is spent on poor shelter and feeding. Most people in this category fail to access the following services: health facilities and education for their offspring. However, such people often prefer to remain in the city claiming that atleast they can pocket a few Shillings on a daily basis, not realising that these few Shillings are to be consumed on daily basis while their life continues to deteriorate unlike the case for the rural relative.

Urban residents as a whole are penalized due to the growing population of urban poor. Inadeqaucies of local and national governments forces the urban poor to occupy spaces illegally,which unfortunately jeopardises the life of the urban residents. An excellent publication!

For me, conclusions of some research work which indicate the relative advantage of rural areas than those poor districts in large cities are nightmares. These conclusions point out the poor level of urban management in large cities. This failure will destroy not only the urban environment but also the rural area. The cosequences are unbearable for the next generations. A country like Egypt should maintain the push forces in rural areas, but has to create other living spaces other than the existing urban agglomerations.

This is very well thought forum, congraculations. I want to concentrate on mainly one area of survival in the slum, water.aceess to clean safe water is a pipe dream for all the slum residents due to limited amount of water generally in the cities, not to mention the now effects of global warming. The kind of reasoning i have is that, water use in the city should be made as efficient as possible by coming up wih water conserving technologies to allow abundancy for all. the quality of life in this dimension on the rural population cannot equal this.Fresh water from springs and rivers serve the rural residents.

This book is an informative document for me in my research work in Jaipur city of Rajasthan state of India, and in Hisar City of Haryana, India. As I do my research in the selected slums I used it to compare the infrastrusture, water, sanitation, and found similar conditions in my slums. I will always use it to help slum women in finding solutions to their problems.

True, though some Sub-Saharan national and regional statistics overlook this fact. Most sub-saharan governments tend to prioritise funding programmes/projects for rural areas on the basis of bigger geographical areas with relatively higher populations of poor people. Such governments often fail to provide similar funding opportunities for their bigger municipalities. Yet most of these municipalities have big slums with some of the poorest communities in such nations.

A very well thought out compendium to ideas that are now filling the cyberwaves - of sharing prosperity through our cities rather than the perpetual struggle to alleviate urban poverty. The idea of setting up a city propserity index provides a useful benchmakrk for city officials to self-evaluate performance against their peers. The overall packaging of the report has also been excellent.
