The urbanisation of poverty is one of the most daunting challenges of the 21st century. An estimated 1 billion people are currently living in slums in cities throughout most of the developing world. This figure could easily reach 2 billion by 2030 unless urgent action is taken to improve the living conditions of existing slum dwellers and to prevent the formation of new slums.
